"A block is attached to a relaxed spring as in Fig. 7-25a. The spring constant ft of the spring is such that for a certain rightward displacement d of the block, the spring force acting on the block has nugnitude f, and has done work IV, on the block A second, identical spring is then attached on the opposite side of the block. as shown in Fig. l-25b both springs are in their relaxed stale in the figure. !f the block is again displaced by d. (a) what is the magnitude of the net force on it from both springs and (b) how much work has been done on it by the spring forces?

Explanation / Answer

In the 1st case, the force on the block by the spring is F1= "K.d", where K is the spring coefficient and d is the displacement.

But in the 2nd case, when the block is displaced by d distance to right, one spring compresses and the other one elongates which causes to force to be twice the value in 1st case. F2 = 2.K.d

similarly the work done is twice in the 2nd case as one spring compresses and the other elongates by same length which is d. so the potential energy content of springs increases to two times as respect to 1st case.

thus work in 2nd case is 2W
