Interpret the Data: How Variable Are the Compositions of Bacterial c Bacteria inside roots (endophytes) in dlayey soil Bacteria inside roots (endophytes) in porous soil Soil bacteria outside rhizosphere in dayey soil Soil bacteria inside rhizosphere in clayey soil These two groups (bacteria inside roots in clayey soil and bacteria inside roots in porous soil) are 34% similar. Soil bacteria inside rhizosphere These two groups (soil bacteria inside younger and inside older roots outside the rhizosphere in porous soil) are 80% similar. in porous soil Soil bacteria outside rhizosphere in porous soil 20 40 60 80 o Younger roots Percent similarity of the "species composition of communities Older roots Data from D.S Lundberg et al. Explanation / Answer

Part A- Bacteria insode the roots are considerably differetn from bactria found either inside or outside the rhizosphere.

As mentioned in the question, by looking at the branch point this conclusion can be achieved. Bacteria inside and outside the rhizosphere arise from the same branch point, and hence are very similar. However, bacteria inside the roots are on a different arm and hence are considerably different from bactria found inside or outside the rhizosphere.

Part B- Variable with the least to the strongest effect are

development stage of root < soil type <community location

This conclusion is based on the percentage similarity. Bacteria found on young and old roots share the same percentage similarity. Hence this factor has the least effect on species composition. Differece in percentage similarity is the lowest for community location adn is intermediate for soil type. Hence community location has the strongest influence and soil type has an intermediate effect.
