Question

A ring shaped conductor with radius a = 3.00 cm has a total positive charge Q = +0.127 nC uniformly distributed around it, as shown in the figure. The center of the ring is at the origin of coordinates O.

(a) What is the magnitude of the electric field at point P, which is on the positive x-axis at x = 38.0 cm?
(b) What is the direction of the electric field at point P?
c) A particle with a charge of - 3.00 uC is placed at the point P described in part A. What is the magnitude of the force exerted by the particle on the ring?
d) What is the direction of the force exerted by the particle on the ring?

Explanation / Answer

a) Use E = KQx/(x^2+a^2)^3/2 where Q = 0.127 nC, a=0.03 m, x=0.38m b) THe electric field points vertically upwards. c) F = -3*10^-9 * E (E obtained from a) ) d) The charge is negative. SO force exerted is upward on the ring. I didnt have a ccalculator at hand right now, so couldnt calculate the part a) :( Hope you got the concept though :)
