Question
recap of report)alligators were brought to new england and the Midwest from Florida as babies, and they grew up and were released into the wild in the nearest river. several years later, the rivers that the alligators had been released into were as free of alligators as they had been before the animals were released.
determine if any of the three following explanations about the fate of the missing alligators are valid and can be supported any principles of evolutionary change and extinction:
1- this is an example of directional selection. this acted against those alligators most sensitive to cold weather. Changes in the gene pool led to the formation of a new "improved" species of alligator that was adapted to local conditions. They migrated up and down the rivers establishing territories in new geographic locations around new england and the Midwest.
2- punctuated equilibrium is responsible for the observed lack of alligators. speciation occurred during the first winter, so that by spring the isolated alligators had evolved into terrestrial forms that foraged in nearby wooded areas.
3-the alligators were not able to adapt to their new environment. extreme weather changes occurred too rapidly for evolutionary change to occur. the released individuals were killed by the winter cold.
Explain why each is valid or in valid.
Explanation / Answer
