Question

Read the following abstract:

"Immunological memory is the basis for long-lasting protective immunity. An important aspect of this line of defense is the class of immune cells known as CD8 T lymphocytes. These cells are crucial for both clearance of viruses and limiting the growth of virally infected cells. The CD8 T cell response to virus results in the formation of a memory population of cells, which serves as a protective barrier against future insults by the same virus. Our research is focused on determining whether by manipulating the mammalian target of rapaymycin (mTOR) pathway and/or administration of the cytokine IL-15 can boost the number of functional memory CD8 T cells in the peripheral tissues and prevent establishment and provide protection from further viral infections."

Write an in depth question (do not answer it) to the author of this abstract. Question must be open ended.

Explanation / Answer

The approaches mentioned by the author i.e. manipulating the mammalian target of rapaymycin (mTOR) pathway and administration of the cytokine IL-15 could be effective in boosting the number of functional memory CD8T cells as both both these approaches have been researched and proven to be effective in working as a molecular systems integrator to support cellular interactions with the environment. However, the question arises when we look at the side-effect or after-effect of these approaches on the overall system. We know that the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway is a crucial cellular signaling hub that integrates internal and external cues to elicit critical outputs, which includes growth control, protein synthesis, gene expression, and metabolic balance. It is importatnt to know how the system itself will behave in response to any manipulation in its functioning. Also, administration of high doses of cytokine IL-15 has been shown to cause substantial systemic toxicity, it is important to know how the system will be made resistant to this.
