Chapter & Experiment Preparation of Acetyisalicylic Acid (Aspirin) Post-Lab Questions 1. The experiment required 3 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid. Why was this acid added? Woukd the reaction take place if this reagent were omitted? rlor 2. A student thought he carefully followed the directions in the experimental procedure, and he expected 26s g of product. However, he isolated 3,05 g of product. What would account for the 3. The above student also found that his product tested positive with 1% írnam chloride solution. What does this test indicate? 4. Another student also expected 2.63 g of product, but isolated only 2.45 g. What is the percentage yield? Show your work

Explanation / Answer

1. A few drop of conc. sulphuric acid is used as catalyst and catalyst speed up the reaction. Thus, in absence of this, the reaction will take place but the rate of reaction will be low.

2. The excess mass may be due to the following reasons:

-unreacted starting material

-Impurities

- improper drying.

3. 1% ferric chloride solution is used to check the presence of phenol group and a positive result shows the presence of phenol group in the product.

4. Percentage yield is calculated by the formual:

Percentage yield = practical yield/ theoratical yield X 100

Thus, Percentage yield = 2.45/ 2.63 X 100 = 93.15%
