Question
Chapter 15 61) Tests of lung capacity slow that adults are able to exhale 1.5 liters of air through their mouths in as little as 1.0 second. (a) If a person blows air at this rate through a drinking straw with a diameter of .60 cm, what is the speed of air in the straw? (b) If the air from the straw in part (a) is directed horizontally across the upper end of a second straw that is vertical, as shown in Figure 15-32 to what height does water rise in the vertical straw?
answer to part A is 53 m/s and answer to part b is 19 cm, i just dont know how you get there.

Explanation / Answer
(a)you know that average rate of air exhale =1.5 liters /second therefore, volume rate of air exhale[1.5 liters/s]=volume rate flow through straw and we also know that volume rate of flow through straw=area of straw*velocity of air flow from this you will get answer of (a) part (b)from equation of motion: v=u+at and also s=ut+1/2*a*t*t therefore considering initial velocity=u=53m/s and final velocity=v=0m/s you will get t=53/a and put t=53/a in equation s=ut+1/2*a*t*t you will get height to which water will rise
