Question

Three blocks are connected on the table as shown below. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block of mass m2 and the table is 0.490. The objects have masses of m1 = 3.00 kg, m2 = 1.10 kg, and m3 = 2.10 kg, and the pulleys are frictionless. Determine the acceleration of each object, including its direction. Determine the tensions in the two cords. If the tabletop were smooth, would the tensions increase, decrease, or remain the same? The tension in the left cord will decrease while the tension in the right cord will increase. The tension in the left cord will increase while the tension in the right cord will decrease. The tensions in the both cords will remain the same.

Explanation / Answer

Let T be the tension
then forces on m1
w-t = am
3*9.8 - T = 3a .............(i) direction downwards

force on m2
friction = F

            = .49 * 1.1 * 9.8 = 5.28N
then forces on m3
T-w = am As it moves downwards
T - 2.1*9.8 = 2.1a................(ii) direction upwards

Solving i and ii

8.82 = 5.1a

a = 1.73 m/s2

Now

T = 24.21 so every thing can be solved now
