Question

I used a projectile launcher which can fire a steel ball at a desired angle, and with three different muzzle velocities. The initial angle of trajectory was read off the launcher, and a tape measurer was used to measure the distance. Carbon paper was used to help locate the precise location of projectile when it hits the floor.

a) Describe some ways that the error in this lab could be reduced, including the possible purchase of additional equipment.

c) Why not use the plastic ball instead of a steel ball? Would you expect better results or worse?

d) What if the ball did not land at the same height as the launch; what if you launched it at an angle from the table and let it hit the floor? Would the ball travel farther or shorter, why?

Thank you so much, will vote lifesaver!!!!!!

Explanation / Answer

1) To reduce error, one can do the following: a) perform many more trials - the more trials done, the more precise data you will receive b) use a projectile launcher that can produce many different muzzle velocities to have a wider set of data 2) the use of a plastic ball would greatly decrease the precision of your results. Since a plastic ball is much lighter, it has a greater chance of being acted on by air resistance, thus negating our ability to ignore air resistance 3) If the ball is to land beneath the initial launch point, the ball will travel farther along the x direction. This is because the ball must still first travel up and then back down to its original starting position. It then will continue to travel further down meaning that the time to hit the carbon paper will have increased dramatically thus increasing your range: Range = (vo)(t) where vo is initial muzzle velocity where t is time so if time is increased, range will increase. bol
