Question

3) Generally, epithelial cell layers are responsible for separating two fluids. For example, the epithelium of blood vessels in animals separates the blood from the interstitial fluid. What eristic would you expect to see in an epithelium that was specialized for passive diffusion of materials from one fluid to another? A) a single layer of flattened cells B) many layers of cells stacked together C) large, cube-shaped cells D) loosely connected cells surrounded by an extracellular matrix 4) In mammals, GH (growth hormone) is an endocrine signal that stimulates repair and growth of various tissues. Which of the following would be required for a tissue to respond to growth hormone? A) the presence of a growth hormone receptor on the responding tissue B) the responding tissue must be muscle C) nerve cells must attach to the responding tissue for growth hormone to work D) a voltage change must occur

Explanation / Answer

Ans 3 : ( B ) many layer of cells stacked together

It is the tissue made of one or more layers of compactly arranged cells that covers an external surface or internal free surface of body organs and which is underlined by a basement membrane. The cells are in contact with one another .Intercellular material is negligible . Blood and lymph vessels are absent. Nourishment comes from the underlying connective tissue. The free surface faces air or fluid. Basement membrane or basal lamina is non cellular sheet made up of protein fibres and proteoglycans. It is secreted by underlying connected tissue though some constituents may be produced by overlying epithelium. Epithelium becomes specialised to perform various functions. Some of the glands formed by it may sink downwards into connective tissues.

Ans 4: ( A) The presence of growth hormone receptor on the responding tissues.

Hormones produce their effects on target tissues by binding to specific protein called hormone receptors located in the target tissues only. Hormone receptors present on the cell membrane of the target cells are called membrane bound receptors and receptors present inside the target cells are called intracellular receptors. Binding of hormone to its receptors lead to the formation of a hormone receptor complex. Growth hormones ( GH ) is the proteinaceous hormone that is secreted by cells called somatotrophs or somatotrope cells.
