Abstracts Introduction Life span development is about understanding the meaning of various life aspects of all kinds of people. All the other life aspect base on this only. Hence it is very important to understand this aspect of life effectively. Different psychologists have developed various theories to understand this aspect of life. Freud's theory- Freud man focus was on the experiences of the person. According to his theory, every persons past experiences determine the flow of their life. Also, he focus on sexual pleasure. He thought that sexual satisfaction is the main drive for everyone. He said that this pleasure seeking points shift from mouth to anus and then to genitals as we get older. On the basis of this only he developed the 5 psychosexual stages of life namely oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital. He said that the ways of replving the conflicts between the societal demands and the pleasure sources is the process which develops our personality. This theory was criticized by others as it overemphasized on sexual desires and then they developed their own models Erik Erikson- Erikson gave psychosocial phases of life. While Freud focused on sexual feelings determining our life span Erikson focused on social norms and the desire to affiliate with them being the major drive for our life. He believed both past experiences and later stages are interconnected and are equally important. Moreover he also said that humans develop and change throughout their life time. Further he gave 8 stages phases of lifespan. Every stage has a crisis to be resolved and the resolution leads to development

Abstract --

The life-span of a person is not only measured in terms of biological aging but also as a psychological and emotional development of that person. With the passage of time, a person gains new experiences and his/her thought process and behaviour is greatly affected by those experiences. As we divide the years of life into infancy, early childhood, late childhood, adolescense, early adulthood, late adulthood and old age ; so can we divide the psychological development of a person.

As a person ages, the priorities in life change. At a young age people are generally self-centered and run after achievements and material goods, but at an older age , people learn to develop and appreciate the values of life. Slowly, they learn the importance of human relations. Maybe this is because they have learnt the futility of worldly goods and are not in search of an identity for themselves.

One more thing comes out from this study and that is -- the older generation feels they are not given their due share of respect from the younger generation and the younger one feels that the elders try to interfere and shape their lives .

The studies conform to Erick Erickson's psychosocial basis of life which states that there is psychological maturity with increase in age. This is further established by Piaget's theory of 'four stages of cognitive development in humans ' .
