A sequence above is mutated on the 5h nucleotide (see bases in bold) to the following: DNA: 3 TAC TGT GGG AAT CAC ACT nsc ATG ACA CCC TTA GTG TGA anthnse 3 VACUG0 666 AAUCAC AC a) (2pts) Does this mutation change the amino acid sequence? If yes- what is new sequence? b) (2pts) Could this mutation change the way the protein functions? How can a mutation change ? protein function? Explain, including any information about the charges ofresulting amino acids (see last page). lis notatron Can dhaukely change ta way the apen fuchun,

Explanation / Answer

Answer ‘B’:

In this case, point mutation occurred. Point mutation is a mutation in which one base pair in the DNA sequence is altered. There are two types of these mutations:-

When a mutation arises, the possible aspects are:-

Missense mutation causes substitution of amino acids which may be chemically similar, known as synonymous substitution. It causes less effect on protein structure and function. When substitution of amino acids is chemically different, it is known as non-synonymous substitution. It causes severe changes in protein structure and function. Non-sense mutations can cause the termination of translation process and produces inactive protein.

At the translational level, when DNA is converted into RNA and then into chain of amino acids during protein synthesis, the mutation changes the function of final protein product.
