Question
A semiconductor manufacturer produces devices used as central processing units in personal computers. The speed of the devices (in megahertz) is important because it determines the price that the manufacturer can charge for the devices. A boxplot for the speeds of 116 randomly selected devices is given below.
Boxplot for Speed of Devices
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| |------------------|------------------- | |
| |---------------| | | -----------------------------| . |
| |......................|...................... | |
| .....................................................................................................---------- --------|
640 660 680 700 720 740 760
speed (in megahertz)
a )Using only the boxplot, estimate the probability that a randomly selected device from the sample has a speed of at least 700 megahertz.
b )Suppose the manufacturer wishes to determine the number of devices in the sample that have speeds of less than 650 megahertz. Can you get this information from the boxplot? If so, how many devices are there? If not, what graphic might you use instead?
Explanation / Answer
a) here from abvoe we can see that 700 megahertz falls at 3rd quartile;
therefore probability that a randomly selected device from the sample has a speed of at least 700 megahertz
=1-0.75=0.25
b)
as 650 falls at first quartile ; therefore probability that sample have speeds of less than 650 megahertz =0.25
hence number of devices in the sample that have speeds of less than 650 megahertz=116*0.25=29
