Question

The drawing shows two perpendicular, long, straight wires, both of which lie in the plane of the paper. The current in each of the wires is I = 6.1 A. In the drawing dH = 0.19 m and dV = 0.49 m. Find the magnitudes of the net magnetic fields at points A and B.

Explanation / Answer

The magnetic field B = µo*I/(2pr) => µo/2p = 2 x10^-7 So the magnitude for wire A and = 2x10^-7*12/0.9 = 2.67x10^-6T and the direction at B is in the-y diirection The magnitude for wire C and = 2x10^-7*14/0.9 = 3.11x10^-6T and the direction is in the +x direction so the magnitude = sqrt((2.67x10^-6)^2 + (3.11x10&-6)^2) = 4.10x10^-6T The magnitude at the other corner is the same
