Question
Cheetahs can sustain speeds of 25 m/s over short distances. One of their prey is Thomson's gazelle, with top speed about 22 m/s. a 55kg cheetah running southward at top speed grabs and holds onto a 25kg gazelle running westward at 22 m/s , find the velocity of these animals just after the attack. Assume that eastward is a positive -direction and northward is a positive -direction.Find the x and y component of the velocity.
PLEASE HELP AND SHOW EQUATIONS.... THANKS
Explanation / Answer
this question can be solved by conservation of linear momentum in north-south and east-west directions respectively considering east-west direction initial momentum of the cheetah-gazelle system : -25X22 since the cheetah has grabbed onto the gazelle; so final mass of the system = 80kg let the component of final velocity be = v m/s -25X22 = 80 X v => v = -6.875 m/s considering north-south direction initial momentum = -55 X 25 final momentum : 80 X u => u = -17.1875 m/s so v and u above are the components of velocity of the system ultimately velocity's magnitude = 18.511 m/s
