Question

A 15-turn rectangular metal loop has a resistance of 5 Ohms and dimensions x = 7.5 cm and y = 14.0 cm. The loop moves to the right with a constant speed of 4.0 m/s (Some external machine keeps the speed constant despite any other forces.) The loop enters a region with a constant magnetic field B0 = 320 mT out of the page. (i) What is the direction and magnitude of the induced current while the loop is entering the magnetic field? (ii) What mechanical force is needed to keep the loop moving at a constant speed?

Explanation / Answer

i) while entering the loop, induced current = Blv/R = 0.32*0.14*4/5 = 0.0358 A direction = clockwise ii) mechanical force needed = BIl = 0.32*0.0358*0.14 = 0.0016 N
