Question

What is the relationship between the size of the zone of inhibition and the relative effectiveness of the antimicrobial? 1. 2. Interpret a result where there is no zone of inhibition. 3. Based on the following scientific paper (See Abstract of paper) why are there no diameters given for ampicillin and Staphylococcus? http://www.bioline.org.br/pdf?ia04014 When resistance develops, making an antimicrobial no longer useful for treatment of a specific disease, which of the following has "become resistant"? The patient, the drug or the bacteria? Which of the 3 antibiotics used in this exercise would work best for treatment of the influenza virus? 4. 5. (Ctrl)

Explanation / Answer

1. The zone of inhibition is related to the susceptibility of the microorganism for that inhibitory agent. More the diameter of zone of inhibition more susceptible will be the microorganism for that inhibitory agent. That mean that inhibitory agent is effective against that microorganism. The inhibitory agent inhibit the growth of that microorganism.

2. If the zone of inhibition is not present then it means that the the inhibitory agent is not effective against the growth of that microorganism or the microorganism has develop resistance for that inhibitory agent.

3. In this paper the researcher studied the antibiotic resistance of the staphylococcus. The staphylococcus has develop resistivity for the drug ampicillin therefore it does not develop zone of ihibition or it migh have develop the zone of inhibition which is not more than the standard used and that is why there is no diameter given for the ampicillin and staphylococcus.

4. When the resistance develops the antimicrobial is no longer use for the treatment because it will not affect the causative microorganism and therefore the disease may be worsen therefore the the alternative antibiotic is used for the treatment. The bacteria develop the resistance for the antibiotic.

5. The rapavab (peramivir), The Relenza (zanamivir) and The Tamiflu would work best for the treatment of the influenza virus
