Question
I have a 2 part question I cannot figure out.. I dont even know where to start to solve it with the givens.. I know there is a round about way of figuring it out, but after 2 hours of stareing at it, I cannot figure it out. Please help! Problem 1: A 100 kg merry-go-round (5m diameter) is rotating at 30 rad/s when a 25 kg child hops onto the very edge, increasing its moment of inertia. Assuming the merry go round is a solid disk, what is the new rotational velocity of the merry-go-round?" Problem 2:The same child from the previous problem goes back to the same merry-go-round. However this time he decided to get a running start. The merry-go-round is rotating at 30 rad/s when the child jumps onto the edge at 5 m/s (tangent to the edge). What is the new rotational velocity of the merry-go-round"Explanation / Answer
Example might help you : Lf = Li Li = Ii i Ii = 250 kg m2 i = 10 rev/min Li = (250 kg m2) ( 10 rev/min) = 2 500 (kg m2 rev / min) Lf = If f If = IMgR + Ichild Ichild = m r2 = (25 kg) (2.0 m)2 = 100 kg m2 If = (250 + 100) kg m2 = 350 kg m2 f = Lf / If = Li / If = [ 2 500 kg m2 rev / min ] / [ 350 kg m2 ] f = 7.14 rev / min
