Question
a BB gun has an efficiency of 30%. IN the BB gun, a spring with force constant of 533 N/m shoots BB pellets with a mass of 1.0 g. When the gun is fully cocked, the spring is pulled back a distance fo 10 cm. What is the velocity of the BB pellet as it leaves the gun after being fired?
I tried using Energy(out)/Energy(in)=Efficiency
[(0.5)m*v^2]/[(0.5*k*x^2]=.30
I obtained 0.02 m/s which doesnt make sense to me because it would take 12 seconds basically to travel a foot.
Could someone help explain what I did wrong.
Explanation / Answer
using same equation , Energy(out)/Energy(in)=Efficiency [(0.5)m*v^2]/[(0.5*k*x^2]=.30 substituting , m = 0.001 kg , k = 533 N/m , x = 0.1 m on solving v = 39.98 m/s Note : put all values in SI units
