Question
A gas is heated and is allowed to expand such that it follows a single straight-line path on a PV diagram from its initial state to its final state. The initial state of 1.00 mol of a dilute gas is P1 = 3 atm, V1 = 0.98 L, and Eint 1 = 458 J, and its final state is P2 = 2 atm, V2 = 2.70 L, and Eint 2 = 973 J. (a) Illustrate this process on a diagram PV. (Do this on paper. Your instructor may ask you to turn in this work.) Calculate the work done by the gas. J (b) Find the heat absorbed by the gas during this process. JExplanation / Answer
a) Work done by gas = Area of rectangle + Area of Triangle = 2 atm x (2.70 L - 0.98 L) + 1/2( 2.70 L - 0.98 L)x(3 atm - 2 atm) = 348.55 + 87.139 = 435.68 J b) Heat Absorbed = 973 - 458 +435.68 = 950.6 J
