Question

Three ropes are connected to each other as shown in the figure. The tension in rope A, which hangs straight from the ceiling, is 396 N. Rope B has an angle of 41 degree with respect to vertical. Rope C has an angle of 17 with respect to horizontal.a) Draw a proper free-body diagram.b) Find the magnitude of the tension of the ropes B and C.Answer with Tension of Rope C.

*** I am not too worried about the final answer to this problem, but I would just like to see how you would set up the formulas to finally plug in everything at the end. I have tried several times and have still gotten it incorrect, so maybe it is a step I am missing. Thank you so much in advance!

Explanation / Answer

sum forces in the x C cos(thetaC) - B sin(thetaB) = 0 C*cos(17) = B sin(41) C = B sin(41)/cos(17) now y direction 396 - B cos(41) - C sin(17) = 0 plug in for C 396-B*cos(41) - B sin(41)*tan(17) = 0 B=414.54 so C = 414.54*sin(41)/cos(17)=284.39 N
