Question
A 2100 kg airplane is pulling two gliders, the first of mass 330 kg and the second of mass 250 kg, down the runway with an acceleration of 1.6 m/s^2(Figure below). Neglecting the mass of the two ropes and any frictional forces.1)Determine the horizontal thrust F of the plane's propeller.Express your answer using two significant figures
2)Determine the tension force T_1 in the first rope.Express your answer using two significant figures
3)Determine the tension force T_2 in the second rope.Express your answer using two significant figures.
4)Determine the net force F_net on the first glider.Express your answer using two significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
1) so the thrust has to accelerate all three objects so F = (m1+m2+m3)a=(2100+330+250)*1.6=4288 N 2) so I am unsure how the ropes hook up but I think its a rope from the plane to the first glider and then a rope to the second glider if that is wrong let me know and I will adjust my answer. we can now look at just the plane so we have F-T1 = m1a T1 = F - m1a= 4288-2100*1.6=928 3) for the second glider we have T2 = m3a so T2= 250*1.6 = 400 4) on glider1 F= T1-T2= 928-400=528
