Question

Two positive point charges are arranged as shown below on a y-axis. The charges and there locations are are: q1 = +11.2 nC at (0, 6.40) mm and q2 = +5.4 nC at the origin. Image: http://www.webassign.net/userimages/ChargesOnY.jpg?db=v4net&id;=128674 a. What is the x-coordinate of the point where a third charge (q3 = 8.2 nC) could be placed so that the net electric force on q3 is 0? mm b. How would you describe the y-coordinate of this point (where the net electric force on q3 is zero) (try to answer this before doing any calculations)? this point will be in the region y < 0 this point will be in the region 0 < y < 3.20 mm this point will be at y = 3.20 mm (halfway between the q1 and q2) this point will be in the region 3.20 mm < y < 6.40 mm this point will be in the region 6.40 mm < y c. What will be the y-coordinate of this point? mm d. How would the y-coordinate you found in part c change if q3 had a different value? it would be the same if q3 is negative, but different if q3 is positive it would be the same if q3 was -8.2 nC, but different for any other value of q3 it would be different for any other value of q3 it would be the same regardless of q3's value it would be the same if q3 is positive, but different if q3 is negative

Explanation / Answer

a) the point where the net electric force on q3 is zero lies between the q1 and q2 thus lying on the y axis, thus X=0

b) the y coordinate of the point will lie between 0 and 3.2mm and the charge at the origin is less.

c) y coordinate cal be calculated as K*11.4/(6.4-y)^2=K*5.4/y^2

or, y=2.622

d) the position of q3 doesnot depend either on magnitude of q3 or the sign og q3. the value of y will be the same for positive or negetive q3.
