Question
As several of you have pointed out in previous discussions, the human genome project has opened the door to a new era in disease treatments. One example is the treatment of various cancers. Cancerous & non-cancerous cells from a person who has been diagnosed with cancer are rapidly sequenced and the results compared. The course of treatment depends on the mutations (and types of mutations) present. How does this differ from the former "standard" treatment, the use of chemotherapeutic agents? Please discuss potential benefits and drawbacks of each type of therapy (personalized vs. chemotherapy).
Explanation / Answer
Answer=
The advantages of chemotherapy =
1] benefits depends on type & stage of cancer
2] In the early stage cancer surgery is performed with the intension of curing of disease
3] It eliminates the cancer cells & prevents recurrence
4] It controls the cancer by slowing its growth & reduces the symptoms caused by the cancer
5] helps in increasing the life span of person
6] is used to shrink on existing tumor ,in order to improve the patients quality of life by decreasing the pain & pressure created bytumor
7] in some cases it can get rid of all cancer cells allowing the patient to go living a normal life
Disadvantages of chemotherapy=
1] The development of treatment related to side effects is main drawback
2] side effects include gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal,or constitutional symptoms
3] show symptoms like nausea, vomiting ,loss of apetite ,diarrhea
4] may also develop painfull mouth soures
5] there is risk of cancer remerging
6] also have effect on persons emotional state
7] in some advanced cases patients may have to spend the entire course of treatment at the hospital
Advantages of personalized therapy=
1] Ability to make more informed medical decisions
2] higher probability of desired outcomes thanks to better targeted therapies
3] Reduced probability of negative side effects
4] Focus on prevention & prediction of disease rather than reaction to it
5] Earlier disease intervention than has been possible in the past
6] reduced healthcare cost
Disadvantages of personalized theropy=
1]it is influenced primarily by environmental factors & their interaction with the human genome
2] it involves identifying genome genomic & clinical information
