Question
The kakapo (Strigops habroptila) is one of the world's most critically endangered birds-as of 2016, only 154 individuals were known to exist on only three islands. A partially managed breeding program is currently being used so that at least one viable, self-sustaining population can be created. a) Estimate the rate of inbreeding in the Codfish Island population of kakapo. based on the (fictitious) microsatellite genotypes below. What is the inbreeding coefficient of this population? b) What are the predicted genotype frequencies in the next generation assuming the same deviation from Hardy-Weinberg observed in part a)?Explanation / Answer
We can calculate inbreeding coefficient by using following formula:
Total number homozygous/ population
Homozygous population = 135/135 +137/137+ 139+139 =13+27+21 =61
Inbreeding coefficient= 61/80 =0.76
Frequency of 135 locus allele=
Individuals of 135 locus/ population
= 13+8+1/80 =22/80 =0.2750.28
Frequency of 137 locus allele= 8+27+10/80= 0.5625 0.56
Frequency of 139 locus allele=1- (0.28+0.56)= 1-0.84 = 0.16
