Question Part Points Submissions Used A diatomic ideal gas expands from a volume of VA = 1.00 m3 to VB = 3.00 m3 along the path shown in the figure below. The initial pressure is PA = 2.00 105 Pa and there are 52.0 mol of gas. Calculate the work done on the gas during this process. Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. J Calculate the change in temperature of the gas. Calculate the change in internal energy of the gas. (Take the molar specific heat of a diatomic gas for this process to be CV = R.) J How much thermal energy is transferred to the system?

Explanation / Answer

(a)the work done is

W = P x (V2 - V1)

where P is pressure and V2 and V1 are volumes

(b)let dT be the change in temperature

we know that

P x (V2 - V1) = nRdT

or dT = (P x (V2 - V1)/nR)

where n = 52.0 mole and R = 8.314 J/mol/K

(c)we know that

dQ = dU + dW

or dU = dQ - dW

here,dQ = dW

or dU = 0

the change in internal energy is zero

(d)the thermal energy transfered to the system is W
