Question
Two large boxes, A and B, are at rest on a frictionless floor. The boxes are identical in all ways, except that the mass of box A is ten times that of box B. Which statement is true?
b. box A is ten times harder to accelerate across the floor than box B.
c. both boxes are equally hard to accelerate across the floor.
d. no force is needed to accelerate the boxes across the floor since it is frictionless.
e. the mass of each box must be known to determine the answer.
Explanation / Answer
As there is no friction force required to move the block = ma(mass*acceleration)
so on A , force = Ma*Aa
on B, force = Mb*Ab but Ma = 10Mb
so force on A = 10Mb*Aa
if forces are equal then 10Mb*Aa = Mb*Ab
so it is 10 times harder to accelerate A across floor than box B
so answer is B
