Question
The figure below gives the angular speed versus time for a thin rod that rotates around one end. The vertical axis is marked in increments of 3 rad/s.
(a) What is the magnitude of the rod's angular acceleration?
(b) At t = 4.0 s, the rod has a rotational kinetic energy of 1.5 J. What is its kinetic energy at t = 0?
Explanation / Answer
a)ang. acc =slope of line=(21-(-6))/(6-0)=4.5 rad/s^2
b)0.5*Iw^2=1.5
So
0.5*(m^L^2/3)*12^2=1.5
So
mL^2=0.0625
So
at t=0
KE=0.5Iw^2=0.5mL^2/3*36=6mL^2=6*0.0625=0.375J
