Question

A pair of slits, separated by 0.190 mm, is illuminated by light having a wavelength of ? = 595 nm. An interference pattern is observed on a screen 122 cm from the slits. Consider a point on the screen located at y = 1.50 cm from the central maximum of this pattern. What is the path difference ? for the two slits at the location y? Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. mu m Express this path difference in terms of the wavelength. Will the interference correspond to a maximum, a minimum, or an intermediate condition? maximum minimum intermediate

Explanation / Answer

(a) path difference = dsin(theta) = d(theta) where d = distance between slits and theta is derived by inverse tangent of y over L.(sincee theta is very small tan = sin = theta)

(theta) = 1.5 / 122 = 0.012295
and d = 0.19 mm

path diff = 0.19*0.012295 = 2.33 micro meters
(b) once you find the path difference, set it equal to m*wavelength. Wavelength was given so the only unknown is the m. solve for m

path diff = 0.19*0.012295 = 2.33micrometers = m *595 nm

m = 2330/595 = 3.915

c) here m is not an whole integer...it is neither maximum nor minimun...its an intermediate
