Question

When a diver jumps into a lake, water leaks into the gap region between the diver's skin and her wetsuit, forming a water layer about 0.5 mmthick. Assume that the total surface area of the wetsuit covering the diver is about 1.0 m2, and that the water enters the suit at 12?Cand is warmed by the diver to skin temperature of 35?C. The specific heat of water is 1.00 kcal/kg?C?.

Estimate how much energy (in units of candy bars= 300 kcal) is required by this heating process.

Points will be awarded to whoever can explain how they got to the answer they got, thank you (:

Explanation / Answer

volume of water = surface area * thickness = 1 * 0.0005 = 0.0005 m^3

so.. mass of water = 0.0005 * 10^3 kg   = 0.5 kg

so.. energy required = mass of water * ( Final temp - Initial temp ) * specific heat

= 0.5 * ( 35- 12 ) * 1 = 11.5 K Cal = 11.5 / 300 = 0.03833333 candy bars
