Question

Give a mammalian example of how the environment and ecology of a species can a) prohibit, b) promote, or c) permit (allow) group formation. In the case where the environment only permits group formation (doesn’t force it), what else acts to create the groups?

A couple twists on the above question could be: describe how the environment promotes sociality in yellow-bellied marmots, or discuss how variation in the ecology of mongooses (e.g., size, diet, nocturnal vs diurnal activity) relates to variation in group formation and sociality among species

Explanation / Answer

Yellow-bellied marmot are good example for promoting sociality.Marmot sociality get influenced by ecological variation through creating opportunity for social groups to form.Summer is the active season and they gain weight since they hiberate around seven months during winter.Even though Marmots show polygynous society in small habitat patches females live alone these patches are widely spaced.Multiple female supports the large habitat patches and it get influenced by relationships among females and patch is corelated to population size.

Behaviour and population persistance is highly influenced by predators.Marmots have more visibility which are living in patches with rocks and those living in fewer rocks and poor visibility get extinct. So predators influence the social interactions and social behaviour and there by influence population size of marmots.

Environment influences the population of marmots sooner the snow melts the growing season of the marmot begun earlier and since food availability duration also get increased body mass increases in summer this influences survival of adult female thus increases the population size.Reproductive success is highly influenced by pre hibernation body mass.
