Question

Two identical cylinders are filled with one mole of oxygen.  The cylinders are closed at the top by pistons of equal mass which are free to move up or down.  The pistons fit tightly so that no gas can escape and there is negligible friction between the pistons and the cylinder walls.

Cylinder 1 is thermally isolated from its surroundings and cylinder 2 rests in a large container of room temperature water.  The gas in each cylinder is initially at room temperature.

Equal masses are slowly placed on top of each of the pistons as shown above.

1) Is the work done on the gas in cylinder 1 positive, negative, or zero?

2) Is the work done on the gas in cylinder 2 positive, negative, or zero?

3) Is the change in internal energy of the gas in cylinder 1 positive, negative, or zero?

4) Is the change in internal energy of the gas in cylinder 2 positive, negative, or zero?

Please Explain your answers.

Explanation / Answer

1)POSITIVE as work done is positive due to the force's direction and displacement are same

2)POSITIVE as work done is positive due to the force's direction and displacement are same

3)POSITIVE as temperature increased due to the pressure given upon the gas by masses through piston and it's also isolated system

4)ZERO as the increment of temperature will be compensated with the temperature of the room,so the system's internal energy will be same as before.
