Question
A conductor in the shape of a spherical shell of radii a=4 and b=5 cm is charged to 20microcoulomb. Draw the graph of electric field as a function of distance from 0-10 cm? (2.5, 4.5, 6.0 cm) Find the electric potential at each of these points (2.5, 4.5, 6.0 cm) Now consider a case of a 5microcoulomb charged spherical insulator of radii 3cm being placed at the center of the spherical shell. This charge is uniformly distributed over the volume of the sphere). Draw a diagram illustrating the shell and indicate where the charge is Find the electric field at the following radii (2.5, 4.5, 6.0 cm)Explanation / Answer
1)
in side the sphere there is no charge so electric field will be zero
between radii a and b there will be electric field
and outer a whole of shell will be act as charge as a whole so net electric field is kq/r^2
2) at 2.5 electric potentiol is kq/5
at 4.5 k1/5- kq/4
at 6 kq/6
3)
since net electric field inside conductor is zero
whne charge is placed inside the shell
there is uniform -ve charge distributed over inner shell
and equal opposite at the outer shelll
so that net electric filed is zero
