Question

A contestant in a winter games event pushes a 47.0 kg block of ice across a frozen lake as shown in Figure 4.29(a). The coefficient of static friction is 0.1 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.03.

A contestant in a winter games event pushes a 47.0 kg block of ice across a frozen lake as shown in Figure 4.29(a). The coefficient of static friction is 0.1 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.03. Calculate the minimum force F he must exert to get the block moving. 1 N What is its acceleration once it starts to move, if that force is maintained? 2 m/s2

Explanation / Answer

(a)Normal reaction=m*g=47*9.8=460.6

Frictional force= coefficient of friction*normal reaction=0.1*460.6=46.06N

so F*cos(25)=46.06

F=46.06/cos(25)

F=50.821N

(b)kinetic frictional force=0.03*460.6=13.818N

Net force=50.821-13.818=37.003

acceleration=37.003/mass=37.003/47=0.787N
