Question

In a microscope of the type shown in the figure, the focal length of the objective is 4.03 cm, and that of the eyepiece is 9.48 cm. The distance between the lenses is 27.0 cm. (a) What is the tube length s? (b) If image I in the figure is to be just inside focal point F'1, how far from the objective should the object be? What then are (c) the lateral magnification m of the objective, (d) the angular magnification m? of the eyepiece, and (e) the overall magnification M of the microscope?

Explanation / Answer

Part A)
The tube length is given, it is the distance between the two lenses. That is 27 cm.

Part B)

Apply 1/f = 1/p + 1/q

q will be 27 - 9.48 = 17.52

1/4.03 = 1/p + 1/17.52

p = 5.23 cm

Part C)
m = -q/p = -17.52/5.23

m = -3.35 (The negative can be ignored, it just means inverted)

Part D)
me = 25/fe

me = 25/9.48 =
2.64

Part E)

Overall = (-3.35)(2.64) = -8.83 (The negative can be ignored, it just means inverted)
