Question 3 only please

Part of the apparatus you will use is shown below. If m1 is released the system will accelerate. Figure 1 Assume the pulley is massless and friction less, and also ignore frictional forces for Qs 1& 2. Draw a free body diagram for both m1 and m2. Draw arrows for each force acting on the masses, and label the forces. Hint: there will be two forces acting on m2 and three on m1. Apply Newton's second law to each mass, eliminate the tension T, and determine the acceleration of the system - show all your work for credit. If the frictional force on m1 was not negligible, how could you determine the coefficient of kinetic friction, muk?

Explanation / Answer

Draw the freebody diagram in presence of frictional force. The frictional force acting on the mass m1 = mu*m1*g and it opposes the direction of motion. So we have:

m2*g -T =m2*a ...(1)

T - mu*m1*g = m1*a ...(2)

Adding (1) and (2) we get:

(m2 - mu*m1)*g = (m1 + m2)*a

=> m2 - mu*m1 = (m1 + m2)*a/g

=> mu = ( m2 - (m1 + m2)*a/g) / m1
