Question
An object hanging in air, as in Figure A below, caused the scale to balance at 0.420 kg. When the object was submerged in water, as in Figure B, the scale balanced at 0.23 kg. The density of water is equal to 1000 kg/m3. The density of air is so small that it can be ignored. Find the weight of that object in air. Weight in air = Find the apparent weight of the object when submerged in water. Apparent weight in water = What is the volume of the object? Volume = What is the density of the object? Density of the object =Explanation / Answer
1) Weight in air = 0.42*9.8=4.116 N
2) Apparent weight in water = 0.23*9.8=2.254 N
3) Weight in air=Apparent weight in water+V*rho*g
==> 0.42=0.23+V*1000
==> V=1.9 E-4 m^3
4) density=m/V=0.42/1.9 E-4 =2210.42 Kg/m^3
