Introduction to Real-Time Simulation
Usually the Real-time simulations are entirely distinct from the offline simulations in several features like execution time and contraints. We will explain and will be mainly focusing on some points like real time simulation constraints, different types of modes, and the hardware accesible to execute the real-time simulation.
1.1 What is Real-time Simulation?
Usually the software packages such as Matlab and simulink are used for verification of the mathematical performance, theoretical and of new designs of system. But these packages usually runs in offline mode which needs more computational time than needed in real system. And it stops the interface of external hardware which restrict of the use of these packages to only offline verification and no hardware included in the procedure [1].
To make it to interface external hardware, the simulator should get inputs from the external system and manipulate it to get the model output inside the computation time of the model and should be smaller than the simulation time-step. If the simulation time-step is not completed within the time, the simulation is considered wrong, in such scenario time-step is removed and the simulator take the following time-step to perform the next calculation. This is known as an overrun.
what is OPAL RT System?
OPAL RT is a simulation system which is used to develop a rel time simulations ( a computer model of a physical system ( any system such as power grid, motor drives etc)).
example:
suppose if you designing a circuit breaker, then you might use the OPAL RT systems to develop a real time power system with your model of circuit breaker. Using this real time simulation you can find the actual time the circuit breaker takes to clear the fault in the power system.
ie. if the actual circuit breaker in the power system takes 0.5 seconds to clear the fault then the real time simulation will also take 0.5 seconds to clear the fault. This is usually done to check the feasibility of the newly designed circuits. since the physical testing of circuit will cost high and may create unwanted issues.
Now we look into our paragraph,
This OPAL RT System consists of two parts namely host computer and real time simulator. where the host computer holds the simulation software ie. RT lab and the real time simulators consists of the hardware which is used to simulate or produce a computer model of the desired physical system.
in other words , the simulink model of the motor drive is developed in the RT lab software which resides in the host computer. then the real-time simulators device(s) are used to simulate the computer model of motor drive which is exactly equivalent to the real time physical motor drive.(ie it produces same output and takes same time for execution as that of a real physical motor drive)
Explanation / Answer
Real time simulations are offline simulations with the features like execution time and constraints. Here we will focus on some points like constraints, different types of modes, and the hardware accesible to execute it.For verification of the mathematical performance, theoretical and of new designs of system we use MATLAB and simulink used in offline which need more computational time. The interface of the external section stops and no hardware is included in external point in order to do this a simulator will be used for step by step for next calculation called overrun.OPAL RT is used for real time systems. It helps in finding actual time and fault clearance time.OPAL RT has two sections host computer and real time simulatorused to simulate the computer model of motor drive which is exactly equivalent to the real time physical motor drive.
