Question

In our optical link the LED will be the transmitter (converting electrical signals into light), and the photodiode with be the receiver (converting light into electrical signals). You need to forward bias the LED in order to emit light while reverse bias the photo-diode to detect light, as shown in Figure 1. Photo diode LED Figure 1: LED and photodiode 2.1. LED choice We have 4 different LEDs in the lab: red light (in red package and transparent package), yellow light and green light: LED Yellow LED Green LED Red Based on the LEDs and the photodiodes datasheets, choose the LED to achieve the highest photodiode output current for a fixed distance from the photodiode. Use the SFH213 photodiode for receiving. Explain your choice.

Explanation / Answer

For the specified photodiode i,e, SFH213 , the wavelength for peak sensitivity is 850nm (data taken from the datasheet : http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1672048.pdf)

Since Red LED light would be closest to the wavelength of 850nm, therefore it shoould be chosen to achieve the highest photodiode output current.
