Question
Show with a geometric calculation that the relative line of sight speed between satellite and ship (and thus the Doppler shift) does become 0 when the satellite is at the location in azimuth where the ship shows up in the SAR image.
Explanation / Answer
Answer
(a)
TerraSAR-X is an imaging radar earth observation satellite.
TerraSAR-X was launced on 15 June 2007. It is moving in the polar orbit at an altitude of about 514 km.
The resolution of these images is upto 1m and it has an excellent radiometric accuracy and has a quick site access time of maximum 2.5 days to any point on the earth.
On seeing the image we can say that the image is taken from the right looking since the signature of the ship and wake are on the left side of the image.
We also observe that the upstream part of the ship is bright whereas downstream part is dark.
