Question

The current in a conductor varies in time as shown in the figure.

(a) How many coulombs of charge pass through a cross section of the conductor in the interval t = 0 to t = 5.0 s?

(b) What constant current would transport the same total charge during the 5.0-s interval as does the actual current?

The current in a conductor varies in time as shown in the figure. How many coulombs of charge pass through a cross section of the conductor in the interval t = 0 to t = 5.0 s? What constant current would transport the same total charge during the 5.0-s interval as does the actual current?

Explanation / Answer

a)I=dq/dt,

so that total charge will be equal to area of common part b/w line and x-axis that is,

=1/2*1*6+ 1/2*1*2+1*1+1/2*1*3+1/2*1*4

=8.5coulombs

b)I=Q/T

i=8.5/5=1.7A
