Question

I want to try to solve this on my own but I'm having a little trouble figuring out the normal force for both a.) and b.)

Block A in the figure weighs 1.30N and block B weighs 4.40N. The coefficient of kinetic friction between all surfaces is 0.300. (Figure 1) Find the magnitude of the horizontal force necessary to drag block B to the left at a constant speed of 9.00cm/s if A rests on B and moves with it (figure a). Find the magnitude of the horizontal force necessary to drag block B to the left at a constant speed of 9.00cm/s if A is held at rest by a string (figure b). In part (A), what is the friction force on block A?

Explanation / Answer

F = mu*N = (1.3+4.4)*0.3

=1.71 N

B)

F = Mu(N1+N2)

= (1.3+4.4+1.3)*0.3

=2.1 N
