Question
I want to try and understand class schedule preferences of students that attend the five-colleges (UMass, Amherst, MHC, Smith, Hampshire). Particularly, I’m curious if year (e.g. Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, Senior) plays a role in whether students like to take classes early in the morning or late in the afternoon. To this, I want to take a random sample of students across all the colleges and years and collect data via a survey. For each sampling method, describe how I might try to collect a representative sample for this study.
1. Stratified sampling:
2. Cluster sample:
3. Multistage sampling:
4. Systematic sampling:
Explanation / Answer
1)
In Stratified we divide population in homogeneous segment then we take sample is randomelly.
So we create segments of all students freshmen sophomore, juniour and senior.
And then take random sample . This is Stratified sampling .
2)
Cluster sampling we select cluster randomelly .
So here five colleges are 5 clusters and you have to select randomelly cluster from 5.
3)
Here you choose randomelly cluster and take random sample from that cluster that is a multistge sampling .
Suppose here you choose 3 rd college MHC ( cluster) and take random sample of freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior students.
4)
systamatic sampling:
In this sampling method you take sample acording to random starting point and fixed periodic interval.
e.g suppose all students stand in one line you take sample of students in even number.
means 2nd place students , 4 place students so on.
