Question

A point charge of mass....

A point charge of mass 0.175 kg , and net charge +0.400 mu C , hangs at rest at the end of an insulating cord above a large sheet of charge. The horizontal sheet of fixed uniform charge creates a uniform vertical electric field in the vicinity of the point charge. The tension in the cord is measured to be 5.43 N . Determine the direction of the electric field due to the sheet of charge (see (Figure 1)). Calculate the magnitude of the electric field due to the sheet of charge. Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

weight of mass = 0.175 * 9.81 = 1.71675 N

so.. force due to electric field = 5.43 - 1.71675 = 3.71325 N

a) force due to electric field acts downwards

b)

so.. magnitude of fiels = force / charge = 3.71325 / (0.6 * 10^-6 ) = 6.18875 * 10^6 N/C
