Question

A point charge of mass 9.910?2 kg and charge +6.77 uC is suspended by a thread between the vertical parallel plates of a parallel-plate capacitor, as shown in the figure .

If the angle of deflection is 22 degrees, and the separation between the plates is 0.025 m, what is the potential difference between the plates?

Answer in voltage

A point charge of mass 9.9½10?2 kg and charge +6.77 uC is suspended by a thread between the vertical parallel plates of a parallel-plate capacitor, as shown in the figure . If the angle of deflection is 22 degrees, and the separation between the plates is 0.025 m, what is the potential difference between the plates? Answer in voltage

Explanation / Answer

This can be done using the sum of forces in the component directions.

In the y direction, there will be a component of the Tension in the string holding up the mass. That must balance the weight hanging down. Therefore in the y direction we have

Tcos(22) = (9.9 X 10-2)(9.8)

T = 1.05 N

Then in the x direction, the electrical force qE pushes to the right while the Tension has a component in the x direction. Thise two forces must balance each other

qE = Tsin(22)

E = (1.05)(sin22)/(6.77 X 10-6)

E = 5.81 X 104 N/C

Finally, for a capacitor,

V = Ed

V = (5.81 X 104)(.025)

V = 1.45 X 103 V which is 1450 Volts
