Question

1) A rescue plane wants to drop supplies to isolated mountain climbers on a rocky ridge H = 215 m below.

If the plane is traveling horizontally with a speed of 265.0 km/hr (73.611 m/s), how far in advance of the recipients (horizontal distance) must the goods be dropped?

------

2) Suppose, instead, that the plane in the previous problem releases the supplies a horizontal distance of x = 449 m in advance of the mountain climbers.

I need both correct answers, in order to give full rating Please. THanks

Explanation / Answer

1)
let t is the time taken to fall down.

H = 0.5*g*t^2

t = sqrt(2*H/g)

= sqrt(2*215/9.8)

= 6.62 s

x = vox*t

= 73.611*6.624

= 487.6 m <<<<<<<<----------Answer

2) time taken,

t = x/vox

= 449/73.611

= 6.1 s

now Apply, H = voy*t - 0.5*g*t^2

-215 = voy*6.1 - 0.5*9.8*6.1^2

voy*6.1 = 182.34 - 215

voy = -32.67/6.1

= -5.36 m/s

"-" sign indicates downward direction <<<<<<<<----------Answer
