Question

(a) What is the length of a simple pendulum that oscillates with a period of 2.6 s on Earth, where the acceleration due to gravity is 9.80 m/s2,and on Mars, where the acceleration due to gravity is 3.70 m/s2?

(b) What mass would you need to suspend from a spring with a force constant of 20 N/m in order for the mass-spring system to oscillate with a period of 2.6 s on Earth, where the acceleration due to gravity is 9.80 m/s2, and on Mars, where the acceleration due to gravity is 3.70 m/s2?

Answers for Earth and Mars. A is in m and B is in kg...will rate 5 stars for correct!

Explanation / Answer

a) T=2Pi*Sqrt(L/g) where T is time of oscillation L = length of string , g= acceleration due to gravity

On earth

T= 2.6 sec g= 9.8

2.6 = 2 Pi * Sqrt(L/9.8)

L= 1.68 metres

On Moon

T= 2.6 g=3.7

L= 0.63 metres

B)
