Question

IR spectroscopy: Choose at least one signal in the diagnostic region of this IR spectrum, and indicate (by labeling it/them on the spectrum) what it/they tell you (i.e. what functional group or type of bond is indicated by each peak). Be as specific as possible -e.g. is it a single, double, or triple bond? What are the hybridization states of the atoms involved (if that information is on your reference sheet)? 2. 100 80 60 ST 40 20 4000 2016-909227 1500 Wavenumber [cm 3000 2000 1000 400 Name one kind of bond that you can be sure is not present based on the IR spectrum. Indicate at what wavenumber range you would expect to see the peak for that kind of bond.

Explanation / Answer

Peaks are present below 3000 cm-1 . This indicates we have sp3 hybridised C - H bond streching. This is expected near 2900 - 2950 cm1.

No peaks in region of 1500 to 3000 cm-1 which indicates absence sp2 , sp hybridised carbons and oxygens.

Peak at 1200 cm-1 indicates C-O streching. C-O streching frequency occurs in 1050 - 1250 cm-1 range.

Hence we had C-O ( ether)
