Question

IR spectroscpy. Using common IR wavenumber frequnceies, determine the unknown compound. Possibilities: alumina, ammonium chloride, ascorbic acid, benzoic acid, boric acid, caffeine, cysteine, phenoxymethylpenicillin, polyamine, and tripolyphosphoric acid. I was concidering polyamine due to the "fang" due to the 3380 and 3518 peak possibly representing an amine group. Cysteine is close to, but normally has a 2250 peak for the S-H bond. Please weigh in!!

Explanation / Answer

IR analysis

Peaks at 3518 cm-1 and 3381 cm-1 are for N-H stretch

the compound has amine functionality

the peaks at 3026 cm-1 is for sp2 =C-H stretch

2788 cm-1 is for C-H stretch

1612 cm-1 and 1670 cm-1 is for C=C stretch

Most probable identity of compound = Polyamine
