Question

Detailed answer please. Easy 1500

A cat is located 4.7 m in front of a concave mirror. The mirror has a radius of 1.9 m. Construct a ray diagram to scale following the steps outlined in the procedure here.

(a) Where is the image of the cat?

(b) Is this image real or virtual?

(c) If the image of the cat is 4.5 cm tall, how tall is the cat?
cm

An object 7.0 cm tall is 35 cm in front of a convex mirror with a radius of curvature of 35 cm.
(a) Construct a ray diagram to scale following the steps outlined in the procedures here. Indicate the parallel, focal, and central rays in your diagram

(b) Where is the image?

(c) Is the image real or virtual?

How big is it?
cm

Explanation / Answer

apply for concave miriror, 1/f = 1/u +1 /v

here f = R/2 = 1.90/2 = 0.95 m

so v = uf/u-f

v = 0.85* 4.7/(4.7 -0.95)

v = 1.063 m

it is areal image

magnificatiom m = -v/u

m = -1.062/4.7= -0.226

so image height = -0.226* 4.5 = 1.02 cm , inverted image

2. apply for convex mirror, -1/f = 1/u +1/v

here f = R/2 = 35/2 = 17.5 cm

v = uf/(-u-f)

v = 35* 17.5/( -17.5-35)

v = -11.667 cm is the image distance from lens

so magnifuication m = -v/u

m = -(-11.667)/35 = 0.334

so image height Y' = 0.334* 7 = 2.338 cm
